When you travel by road with the convoy to see the temple at Abydos, your time there is severely limited so travelling up there by train becomes an attractive alternative.  The station you must aim for is El Balyana.  Not all trains stop at this station so please check before getting on the train.  The return journey is easier because all the trains travelling south stop at Luxor.  El Balyana is about 10 kms from Abydos and it is easy to arrange a taxi for the journey to the temple but you will have to have a police escort.

Since this page was created there has been a dramatic fall in the value of the pound and tickets now cost more than quoted. Exchange rate in April 2009 is around 8 Egyptian pounds to the British Pound.
